12 Hours of carefully planned provision

A typical week at After Hours Education combines strong academic teaching with targeted personal support.

 

Students receive 4 hours of English and 4 hours of Maths each week, giving them focused time in the two core subjects that matter most for GCSE success and future progression.

Alongside this, learners take part in 2 hours of targeted intervention and reintegration support, helping them overcome barriers, rebuild confidence and strengthen their readiness for learning.

The programme also includes 2 hours of personal development, designed to build resilience, communication, self-regulation and wider life skills.

In total, this creates a balanced 12-hour weekly provision that blends high-quality teaching with the pastoral and developmental support young people need to re-engage, make progress and move forward positively.

English GCSE

At After Hours Education, students follow the AQA GCSE English Language specification (8700).

 

The course develops reading, writing and spoken communication skills through the study of fiction, literary non-fiction and non-fiction texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. Students learn how to read closely, compare writers’ viewpoints and methods, and produce clear, accurate and purposeful writing for different audiences and purposes. The qualification is assessed through two written exams:

 

Paper 1: Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing and

 

Paper 2: Writers’ Viewpoints and Perspectives

Maths GCSE

At After Hours Education, students follow the Pearson Edexcel GCSE Mathematics specification (1MA1).

The course develops fluency, reasoning and problem-solving across the core areas of number, algebra, ratio and proportion, geometry and measures, probability, and statistics.

 

Students learn how to apply mathematical knowledge accurately, select efficient methods and solve problems in both familiar and unfamiliar contexts. The qualification is assessed through three written exam papers:

 

Paper 1: Non-Calculator

Paper 2 and Paper 3: Calculator

Students are entered for either Foundation Tier or Higher Tier, depending on their starting point and target grade.

Reintegration Support

Reintegration support helps students successfully transition back into mainstream education when the time is right. Through structured guidance, mentoring and close collaboration with the referring school, students rebuild routines, strengthen learning behaviours and develop the confidence needed to return to a full school environment. The focus is on stabilising attendance, improving engagement and ensuring that reintegration is gradual, supportive and sustainable.
